Viewing the Safety of Supercapacitors from the Explosion of a Romoss

2025-06-25

Recently, the explosion incidents of Romoss power banks have drawn widespread attention. After multiple accidents such as a power bank explosion during a Zhejiang consumer's trip to Japan and a Romoss power bank catching fire on a Hong Kong Airlines flight, Romoss announced the recall of over 490,000 power banks with potential safety hazards. The reason is that issues with the raw materials of some battery cells may cause a very small number of products to have a risk of catching fire under extreme circumstances. Currently, all power bank products have been removed from the official Romoss flagship store on Taobao.

It is rumored that the cause of this quality accident is that Romoss purchased the battery cells produced by a certain manufacturer. The supplier outsourced the production business to other companies, and the raw materials were secretly replaced, which led to quality problems with the battery cells. This supplier not only cooperates with Romoss but also with major mobile power manufacturers such as Anker. Currently, Anker has also recalled the involved power banks.

The Romoss incident has exposed potential loopholes in the traditional power banks in terms of battery cell quality, production technology, etc. Godetek, also a "participant in the energy industry", is also thinking about how to improve the safety risks of supercapacitors.

Supercapacitors, also known as electric double - layer capacitors, are different from traditional batteries. They store energy by polarizing the electrolyte. In terms of safety, supercapacitors have significant advantages. First of all, supercapacitors do not involve chemical reactions and only store and release charges through physical processes. This avoids the risks of overheating, combustion, and even explosion caused by the uncontrolled internal chemical reactions of traditional lithium - ion batteries. The explosion of Romoss power banks is largely due to the internal chemical problems of the battery cells. Secondly, supercapacitors can withstand larger charging and discharging currents, and during the charging and discharging process, the temperature change is relatively small, which further guarantees the stability during use. However, supercapacitors are not perfect in terms of safety at present. Currently, there are problems such as liquid leakage of button - type supercapacitors in the industry - this is also a major safety and technical difficulty of supercapacitors. Therefore, Godetek has conducted research for many years and created a series of new technologies to ensure product safety.

The explosion incident of Romoss power bank has sounded the alarm for the entire mobile power industry. While continuously pursuing excellent performance, manufacturers must not forget about quality and safety issues. As a participant in the energy industry, Godetek should learn from this and ensure that every supercapacitor delivered to customers is a qualified product with guaranteed quality.
